TMC MLA slaps reporter: Siliguri journalist club demands apology

Mainaguri Trinamool MLA Ananta Dev Adhikari allegedly slapped a local reporter at a press conference on Tuesday

Siliguri Journalists' Club staged a sit-in protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi’s statute in Siliguri on Wednesday in response to Mainaguri Trinamool MLA Ananta Dev Adhikari slapping a reporter during a press conference on Tuesday.

The TMC MLA allegedly slapped Somnath Chakraborty, a reporter from local daily newspaper Bartaman, when asked a question.

During the protest, journalists from the region raised slogans and placards condemning the incident. Siliguri Journalists Club president Pramod Giri, General Secretary Angshuman Chakraborty, Co-President Irfan Azam, and many other members were also present during the protest.

Chakraborty demanded the accused MLA to apologise to the journalist immediately.

"If the TMC MLA doesn't apologise by tomorrow, we will wear black badges and intensify our protests," said Promod Giri, the president of the club.
