Sweet Deal: Arunachal Pradesh to become country’s largest organic Kiwi producer by 2023

Lower Subansiri also became the first district in the country to obtain the Organic Certification for Kiwi in October

Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture and Horticulture Minister Er. Tage Taki on Monday stated that with the establishment of a Kiwi Research Institute in Lower Subansiri district, Arunachal Pradesh would become the largest producer of organic kiwis in the country by 2023.

The Kiwi Research Institute has been created to carry out research and development initiatives.

Er. Tage Taki flagged off a consignment of organic Kiwi fruit to Delhi from Lower Subansiri district on Monday. The 6-tonne consignment was dispatched to Delhi in a Refrigerated van to M/s Prithivi Agro Fresh Pvt Company Ltd, New Delhi from Ziro, the headquarters of Lower Subansiri district. This was the fifth such consignment flagged off from Ziro since 2016.

Er. Tage Taki stated that the institute would assist the Horticulture department in producing sufficient quantities of quality Kiwi saplings for catering to the demands of farmers and urged them to go for large-scale production of selective crops having good market potential. The Minister mentioned about providing transport vehicles and a packing house (for grading and packing) for the benefit of farmers.

DAO Tasso Butung informed that Kiwi production in the district has grown from 60 Metric Tonnes in 2016 to 102 Metric Tonnes in 2019. The representative of the procuring firm stated that the Kiwis from Ziro are the sweetest in the market with the vast commercial scope and urged the growers to maintain the quality and size of the fruit.

Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri district also became the first in the country to obtain the Organic Certification for Kiwi under Mission Organic Value Chain Development Programme for North East Region (MOVCDP-NER) in October.
