There seems to be no end regarding the controversy around jewellery brand Tanishq and its advertisements. After being accused of ‘promoting love jihad’ through one of their earlier advertisements, the brand has drawn wrath for its new video on celebrating the festival of Diwali.
The latest advertisement of Tanishq, featuring Sayani Gupta, Alaya F, Neena Gupta and Nimrat Kaur, talks about what Diwali means to them and how are they going to celebrate it this year, given the pandemic. They also urge people to celebrate a safe Diwali and refrain from bursting firecrackers.
Karnataka MLA and BJP National General Secretary CT Ravi slammed the company for trying to ‘advice Hindus’ on how to celebrate their festivals. He also added that companies should not ‘lecture’ about refraining from bursting crackers.
“Why should anyone advice Hindus on how to celebrate our festivals? Companies must focus on selling their products, not lecture us to refrain from bursting Crackers. We will light lamps, distribute sweets and burst green crackers. Please join us. You will understand Ekatvam (sic),” he tweeted, flagging the ad.
Soon after, netizens, including other BJP leaders, once again started trending #BoycottTanishq and asked the brand to not ‘defame the culture’ by trying to state that only Hindu festivals contribute in pollution.
A section of Twiteratti slammed the company with various tweets and memes.
Earlier, an ad showing a Muslim mother-in-law organising a baby shower ceremony for her Hindu daughter-in-law came under severe criticism by people, especially those from the right-wing. Tanishq later issued an apology and withdrew the ad for hurting people’s sentiments, and to keep its staff and employees’ safety in mind.
