FIR against the entire Editorial team of Republic Media Network by Mumbai Police
In a recent update about the Republic TV, Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami stated that an FIR against the entire editorial team of the network has been filed by the Mumbai Police. According to him all 1000 employees of the network which includes top editors, staff who are part of the production team, graphics team, promos team of the Network are being booked by the Mumbai Police.
The Mumbai police has booked an FIR against four journalists of Republic TV on Friday for allegedly defaming the Police force under sections 500 and 34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and trying to cause "disaffection" among members of the police force. The report was filed on a complaint by sub inspector Shashikant Pawar of the Special Branch.
According to the report, the four employees booked by the Mumbai Police are Shivani Gupta, anchor and deputy news editor, Sagarika Mitra, anchor and senior associate editor, Shawan Sen, deputy editor and Niranjan Narayanswami, executive editor.
The FIR states, the ones charged aired a report on Thursday between 7.00 pm to 7.10 pm about a revolt against Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh by senior police officers which in some way amounted to provocation to disaffection among members of the police force and defamation of the entire police force.
The Mumbai Police earlier in the day, asked the Network Chief Financial Officer (CFO) S. Sundaram to submit details of each and every transaction and detail of all the journalists with the network within 12 hours. Starting from the costs of coffee vending machine, air-conditioning equipment, furniture, gardening, makeup, suits and even hairbrush, toilet paper, tissue papers, A4 paper to other stationery, all details have been sought by the Mumbai Police.
After the FIR against the entire team, the news channel has now stated that the FIR was a shocking assault on media rights. It also stated how this was happening for the first time in the world and that Mumbai Police Commissioner is not above the Constitution and the law.
The channel also stated, that they will fight each and every strongman tactic and the FIR on the channel is a blatant and shocking attack on press freedom by Mumbai Police.
