When the woman's family protested, they were allegedly beaten up and later booked for assault by the police on a complaint by the accused
On Friday, independent MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani tweeted that a Dalit girl from a village in Deodar taluka in Banaskantha district was molested by six persons of the Patel community. The men were all from the same village, and when the family members tried to resist, they were assaulted by around 25 people.
Ironically, Gujarat police charged the 23-year-old alleged victim and five of her family members. They were booked for allegedly assaulting the accused after a verbal spat which broke out between them on September 28 according to Mevani.
The MLA shared a video and tweeted in Hindi, “Victim was beaten in Gujarat. A girl was molested in Rajya village of Deodar taluka of Banaskantha, her hands and legs were fractured, and now the cops have charged the victims based on a complaint by the accused.”
The victim’s 21-year-old brother who narrated what led to the violence said that the victim and their younger sister were on their way to their farms on September 28. They were stopped by six men from the Patel community who began teasing the victim and even “made fun of her,” the young boy added. When his sister warned the six men not to tease her, they allegedly tore her T-shirt and molested her. The boy is also admitted to a private hospital in Palanpur town seeking treatment.
Following credible media reports of the assault, it stated that the victim returned to her home and then informed her parents about the incident. Then the parents, along with their brother and others, confronted the accused youth, which led to violence between the two sides. It was there that the 21-year-old and the victim was injured.
Apart from them, three of the accused also sustained injuries and were hospitalised. However, the police did not arrest the assailants and instead booked the victim’s family for assault, claims Mevani.
