The power of social media: Story of #BabaKaDhaba

After a viral video of an elderly couple unable to sell home-cooked meals in Malviya Nagar, Delhites have come out to support them

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the livelihood of the poor and vulnerable, but if supported properly, it can help them stand back on their feet. One such example is of an elderly couple, who runs 'Baba Ka Dhaba', a food kiosk in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi for 30 years. The eatery which was unable to make ends meet, is now thronged with customers, thanks to social media.

Food blogger Gaurav Wasan, who runs a YouTube channel called Swad Official, shared the video on the couple on Wednesday. Despite being over 80, they duo works for back-breaking hours, and yet, are unable to eke out a living.

In the 11 minute video, the elderly couple narrate their plight. They said they start early at 6.30 am and are prepped for the day by 9 am, but by 1.30 pm they could only earn Rs 70.

This heart touching video was subsequently shared by Vasundhara Tankh Sharma on Twitter with an appeal, "This video completely broke my heart. Dilli waalon please please go eat at बाबा का ढाबा in Malviya Nagar if you get a chance"

In no time the video went viral and now has over 2.6 million views. Bollywood stars, celebrities, netizens from all walks of life have shown support, and help has been pouring in the couple.

Actor Sonam Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Swara Bhasker, Randeep Hooda among others also tweeted for helping the couple. They also requested their followers to visit the eatery when in Delhi.

In an overnight delight, videos and photos from this morning show that Baba Ka Dhaba is flooded with customers. The couple who were in tears till yesterday are now serving a full house. As highlited by a netizen, Delhi has come in support to them.

Sharma along with Advocate Somanth Bharti, and journalists Richa Lakhera, Sohit Mishra, Sakshi Joshi, Rigat Jawaid, Shonakshi Chakravarty and Akash Banerjee also visited them this morning.

Against all the ills of social media, such stories highlighting the true power it holds, brings some respite to the heart.
