India successfully test-fires ingenious nuclear capable Shaurya missile
India successfully test fires new version of indigenous built hyper-sonic nuclear capable Shaurya missile from a defence facility off the coast in Odisha on Saturday.
Amidst border tensions between India and China, the canister-launched missile with a dummy payload was test fired from a land-based platform in full operational configuration marking the first test of the user series. According to reports, the new missile would be inducted in the strategic forces to complement one of the existing missiles in the same category. The missile would be lighter and easier to operate in comparison to the existing arsenal in deploy of the Indian government.
Reports also state that Shaurya missile developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will be less vulnerable to anti-ballistic missile defence systems, thus adding to its strategic importance.
During the test fire, the missile at the final phase of its course moved at hyper-sonic speeds before reaching a height of 40 kilometre as it approached its target.
The missile runs on solid fuel and can automatically direct itself towards the target.
Reports also claim that due to the missile's speed it can evade radar systems easily. It can be also be stored in composite canister which can be easily be hidden, reports say.
DRDO has resonated the call for Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) by the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi in the defence sector which can be seen in the recent efforts to develop indigenous missiles.
Earlier on September 30 another test missile was successfully testfired supersonic cruise missile from Integrated Test Range (ITR) Balasore, Odisha. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile featuring an indigenous booster and air-frame section with the capacity to cruise at a top speed of Mach 2.8 and also has a range of 450 km.
The BrahMos is a ramjet supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, fighter jets, or land.
The missile has been developed as a joint venture between the DRDO and the Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) of Russia.
