In a shocking incident, a 38-year old man was allegedly beaten to death in front of his son by a barber shop owner and his brother over Rs 20 for a shave in North Delhi’s Burari, the police said on Monday. The man’s 13-year old son reportedly tried to stop the attack and begged the assaulter to spare his father’s life.

In connection with the incident that took place on September 24, the police said that they arrested the accused, barber shop owner Saroj and his brother Santosh and have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

According to the police, the incident happened when the victim, Rupesh Kumar went for a shave at the barber shop and was charged Rs 50 for it. He paid Santosh, the owner of the shop Rs 30 and saying he would the pay the rest later, police said.

This led to a quarrel which started escalating to a point where the brothers, Santosh and Saroj allegedly started beating Rupesh with a plastic pipe in their salon.

A video has also surfaced which captured the assault which seem like it was filmed by an onlooker in their mobile phone. The clip shows how Rupesh’s son tried to intervene as his father was beaten. It also shows how many people were watching as the incident took place but no one came forward to help.

Kumar, a vegetable vendor, lived with his wife and five children in Delhi’s Sant Nagar area.

As per police sources, the incident caught police authorities’ attention when they received a call regarding an altercation near Chaudhary dairy near Sant Nagar.

Police official from Burari police station rushed to the spot and came to know that the injured man was taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital by his brother Mukesh.

He was then referred to Safdarjung Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.

An FIR of murder was lodged on the basis of Mukesh’s statement. He alleged that Saroj and Santosh assaulted his brother with a plastic pipe, said a senior police officer.

After allegedly attacking him, the accused brothers assumed that Kumar was dead and fled the scene. With the help of technical surveillance, police were successful in arresting them from where they were hiding in North Delhi.

Kumar’s wife Hemlata said, “After returning home on Thursday evening, my husband had gone to a nearby salon for a shave. The barber asked him to pay Rs 50. My husband gave him Rs 30 and said he would pay the rest by Friday, which led to a heated argument. They told him that he cannot go without paying Rs 20 and started beating him. My elder son was passing through the market and found his father was being attacked… he tried to intervene to rescue him but they pushed him. Onlookers were standing by but no one came to rescue my husband. My son then rushed to his uncle’s home and informed him about the incident.”
