UP: Special force to search, arrest without warrant gets Cabinet nod

The Uttar Pradesh government is contemplating to set up the Special Security Force (SSF) within next three months which would permit the cops to search and arrest without a warrant announced by the government on Sunday.

The state legislative assembly passed the Uttar Pradesh Special Security Force Bill-2020 during the monsoon session which allowed the constitution of the specialized force.

Additional chief secretary (Home) Awanish Kumar Awasthi said that the SSF was established following the verdict of the Allahabad high court asking the state for the security and protection of all court premises in the state.

“The court has directed the director general of police (DGP) to submit a road map for constitution of SSF within next three days and proposal for various posts in the SSF within seven days and rules for implementation of the SSF Act within 15 days time," Awasthi said.

The force will have the power to search and arrest people within arrest warrants. The force will be launched within three months.

The SSF will be deployed in all courts including, high court, district court, state government administrative premises, religious spots, Metro Rail, airport, banks, industrial for the security at these vital installations.

“A total of 1,913 personnel with five battalions of SSF will be constituted in the first phase, however the total strength of the force will be 9,919 personnel with an estimated cost of Rs 1,747.06 crore," Awasthi added.

He also informed that an IPS officer of additional director general (ADG) rank will head the force. However, the superintendence of the force will be done by the DGP. The state government will take the assistance from Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and use their infrastructure.
