The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is in the process of developing Star Wars-style directed energy weapons (DEWS) comprising of high energy lasers and high power miccrowaves.

The DEWS will be designed to fulfill India's short, medium and long term goals, as per reports.

The DEWS to be built by DRDO will comprise of various variants consuming upto 100-kilowatt power. The most promising DEWS to be built is the one comprising of a secretive 'Kali' particle-beam for incoming missiles and aircrafts. Other DEW to be manufactured will include 'chemical oxygen-iodine' and 'high-power fibre- lasers.

The DRDO has already designed two anti-drone DEWS that will now be manufactured in large scale with the help of domestic industry. The anti-drone DEWS will be used to neutralise aerial targets up to a range of 2 kilometres.

The anti-drone DEWS can be easily mounted on tripods and have already been demonstrated to intelligence agencies and armed forces. These two DEWS can bring down drones by either jamming their radio signals or by damaging their on-board electronics with high-power lasers.

According to Indian defence establishment's technological roadmap, the IAF and army would need atleast 20 tactical high-energy laser systems that can destroy small aerial targets to step up the game in electronic warfare.
