Guwahati: Fresh clashes broke out between Indian and Chinese troops at Pangong near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh on the intervening night of August 29-30, an Indian Army statement said.

“On the night of 29/30 August 2020, PLA troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo,” the Indian Army statement said.

“Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the Southern Bank of Pangong Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground. The Indian Army is committed to maintaining peace and tranquillity through dialogue, but is also equally determined to protect its territorial integrity. A Brigade Commander level Flag Meeting is in progress at Chushul to resolve the issues,” it added.

Earlier, during the month of June this year, the military commanders of India and China agreed to peacefully resolve the ongoing border stand-off in eastern Ladakh in accordance with bilateral pacts as well as the agreement reached between leadership of the two countries.

The situation in eastern Ladakh remained tense following the violent clash between Indian Army and Chinese troops that left Indian Army personnel martyred and Chinese soldiers dead. India has also returned Chinese soldiers who were captured during the clash when they crossed over to Indian side.
