Alert BSF troops detect 20-ft-long tunnel along Indo-Pak border in Jammu

The tunnel of 3 to 4 ft width was located on the Indian side in Basantar area of Samba district on Friday

Guwahati: Officials on Saturday said that the Border Security Force (BSF) has detected a tunnel underneath the India-Pakistan international border fence in Jammu.

The tunnel is 50 metres from the border fence on the Indian side and was located by a BSF patrol in the Samba sector of Jammu on Thursday. BSF has now launched a major search operation in the area to identify any other hidden structures that might aid in infiltration.

Rakesh Asthana, director general of BSF, said that he has directed his frontier commanders to ensure that the anti-infiltration grid remains intact and that there exist no gaps along this front. Upon further examination in the tunnel, BSF was able to find plastic sandbags on its mouth which had “Pakistani markings” on them.

A total of eight to 10 plastic bags were recovered from the opening of the tunnel and each has ‘Karachi and Shakargarh’ written on them. The manufacturing and expiry dates embossed on them indicated that the bags were manufactured recently, said officials.

If sources are to be believed, the tunnel has a depth of about 25 ft at the opening. The BSF has launched a mega operation along the IB (International Border) in the area to discover any other such clandestine structure. These tunnels often aid infiltrators to cross over from the Pakistan side and also help in the smuggling of narcotics and arms. Additionally, the force said that the nearest Pakistani border post is about 400 metres from the tunnel.

Officials also said that the entire BSF formation deployed across the 3,300-km international border which runs along Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat is on extra alert. This is because multiple intelligence inputs of terrorists are trying to breach the border and infiltrate into India. BSF is also planning to deploy ground-penetrating radars to detect tunnels along this highly sensitive front.

BSF has already been conducting a mega ‘anti-tunnel drive’ in the IB areas of Jammu and other places after five armed infiltrators were killed recently along this front in Punjab. Moreover, tunnels like this one have been detected by the BSF along the Jammu border front earlier too.
