With one million downloads in less than two months and a 4.2* rating in Google Playstore, this Indian document scanner application ‘Kaagaz Scanner’ is now the new replacement for other Chinese and other non-Indian scanning apps.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign to make India self-reliant has been generating the much-needed awareness of buying and making products in India. Kaagaz Scanner is launched by a team of three seasoned entrepreneurs, doing their second start-up together - Snehanshu Gandhi (IIT Bombay ’07, ISB Hyderabad ’12), Gaurav Shrishrimal (IIT Kanpur ’14) and Tamanjit Singh Bindra (AIT Pune ’06).

“We have been working on another product in productivity space called Sorted AI for the last one year. When our Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi ji called for Aatma Nirbhar Bharat & Vocal For Local, everyone was talking about building Indian apps and removing foreign apps,” said Shrishrimal. The team then found out that there is no decent Indian scanning app available in the playstore and that is when they decided to build one themselves. “It also was a natural extension to our other product (Sorted AI) which is an AI-powered reminders and tasks app and made sense for us to build it,” he added.

It took the team 6-7 days to complete the scanning app and they launched it on June 15 which was almost a month before the Government of India banned the use of 59 Chinese apps. That’s according to the team was also the reason why they have been able to see superb growth since govt. announcement.

“We went from almost zero downloads to 200,000 downloads in three days, all organically. As of today, we have over one million downloads on PlayStore and 70% of the downloads are from WhatsApp forwards and Social Media outreach. On the second and third day after ban we were trending at #2 in Productivity and #11 overall ahead of many well-known apps,” an elated Shrishrimal added.

The app has over 60,000 unique users coming every day and so far more than 10 million pages have been scanned using Kaagaz Scanner in about 1.5 months. The team’s efforts have also been acknowledged by the government of India as part of the #AatmaNirbharBharat App Innovation Challenge where we were given a special mention in the office apps category.

According to the team member, they did not originally plan for Kaagaz Scanner. “We are building a suite of AI-powered utility tools that will help users manage their day-to-day tasks seamlessly. Kaagaz Scanner is our primary product right now and we want to build it into a world-class product,” he said. They plan to bring more products in the coming months. At present, the app is an independent product and is not linked to the Sorted AI file management platform. This is more so because the utility of scanning documents has a much wider appeal than file management.

Additionally, the app does not just stand out due to its Indian origin but also because of its quality which by face exceeds CamScanner. With no ads, watermarks, no sign-ins, and the fact that it can work completely offline, what else can one even ask for? Users can even select from three scanning modes, color scan, black and white, and grayscale. It also has multiple scanning features, social media or text, sharing PDF via email, enhancing the scan quality, and many more.
