Abhijit Mukherjee clarified about his father's death after media was rife with news of the ex-President's death. He also lashed out at media calling it 'factory of fake news'
New Delhi: Rubbishing news about former President Pranab Mukherjee's death, his son Abhijit Mukherjee said, "My Father Shri Pranab Mukherjee is still alive & haemodynamically stable !"
He added, "Speculations & fake news being circulated by reputed Journalists on social media clearly reflects that Media in India has become a factory of Fake News."
The ex-President, 84, had tested positive for COVID-19 last week. He underwent a surgery for removing a brain clot at Army Research & Referral (R&R) Hospital on August 10.
Post the operation, he is in comatose with stable vital parameters and continues to be on ventilatory support.
However, #ripPranabMukherjee started trending on Twitter on Thursday. As a renowned journalist had tweeted that the ex-president has passed away. Following which, Abhijit intervened and clarified about his father's health.
Abhijit later tweeted, "Update : My father is & has always been a fighter ! He is slowly responding to medical interventions & all his vital parameters are stable . I urge upon every well wisher to pray for my father's speedy recovery ! We need them."
Even his daughter, Sharmishtha Mukherjee took to Twitter to clarify. She said, "Rumours about my father is false. Request, esp’ly to media, NOT to call me as I need to keep my phone free for any updates from the hospital."
The veteran Congress leader was the president of India from 2012 to 2017. He has had a long political career during where he donned several hats including that of defence, finance, external affairs, commerce, shipping, and industries minister.
