41 dead after consuming spurious liquor in Punjab; CM orders probe

CM directs police to launch search operation to crack down on spurious liquor manufacturing units in Punjab

New Delhi: At least 41 people have been reported to be killed in three districts on Punjab after consuming spurious liquor. Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident, said officials.

The deaths have been reported from the districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Batala with the youngest victim to be in his 20s and the oldest being 80 years old. The husband of a woman who died was arrested in connection with the selling of suspected spurious liquor.

Director General of Police (DGP) Pujab Dinkar Gupta while addressing the media on the incident said that the five fatalities of consuming spurious liquor were reported from Tangra and Mucchal villages of Amritsar district on the night of July 29.

DGP Gupta further said that police have booked Balwinder Kaur, a resident of Mucchal village, under Section 304 of the IPC (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and under provisions of the Excise Act.

Chief minister has assured strict action against all those involved in the incident and has directed the Punjab police to launch a search operation to crack down on the spurious liquor manufacturing units operating in the state.
