Police have started investigation into the matter and hand sanitisers to be sent for chemical analysis
Prakasam: Nine people died after drinking alcohol-based hand sanitisers instead of alcohol in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh.
Due to the ongoing lockdown, all wine shops in the area remained closed and they, unable to find any alcohol, consumed hand sanitisers to quench their thirst.
The deceased were identified as A. Srinu, 25, B. Tirupataiah, 37, G. Ramireddy, 60, Kadiam Ramnaiah, 29, Ramanaiah, 65, Rajireddy, 65, Babu, 40, Charles, 45, Augustine, 47.
The deceased consisted of three beggars, out of which two used to beg at a local temple in Kurichedu town. After consuming hand sanitisers, they complained of severe burning sensation in their stomachs. While one of them died immediately, another was shifted to a nearby hospital where he breathed his last while undergoing treatment.
Another 28-year-old man consumed country liquor mixed with hand sanitiser and fell unconscious at home. He was declared dead while on his way to the hospital.
Six others were also rushed to the hospital after consuming hand sanitisers and all of them succumbed after some time. People are currently trying to ascertain if more people have been brought to hospitals with similar conditions.
The police have started an investigation into the matter and hand sanitisers were seized from the area to be sent for chemical analysis.
