New Delhi: A video that has gone viral on social media showed an officer of the Uttar Pradesh police kicking a bystander into river Ganga in Mirzapur raising several questions on the conduct of the police in the state.
The police department ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident involving the police officer of Vindhyachal Kotwali police station in Mirzapur.
An inquiry into the incident was ordered after the incident was condemned by several political parties including Bahujan Jagriti Manch of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
“This is how Mirzapur Police kicks the helpless from behind. A man standing near Ganga was kicked by the Kotwal (station incharge). The youth fell into river Ganga,” a tweet from the official handle of the political party said.
According to a statement issued by Mirzapur police, the department defended the actions of the cop and stated that he was just trying to enforce social distancing at the river bank where bystanders gathered to watch an ongoing search operation of a man who drowned in the river before the police arrived on the scene.
Later in a tweet by Mirzapur Police, the department stated that the police officer has been given a warning and an initial inquiry into the incodent has been initiated.
