New Delhi: Education these days have become more and more expensive in this time of pandemic especially for countries like India where a large section of the people live below the poverty line.

A man in Himachal Pradesh sold his cow that was his only source of income, just to buy a smartphone for his children so that they could attend their online classes.

The man, Kuldip Kumar of Jwalamukhi in Kangra district, said that after the schools of his two children closed down in March due to the nationwide lockdown, his two kids were finding it really difficult to continue their studies due to the need to attend online classes with a smartphone.

His two children, one in Class IV and another in Class II, could not attend online classes as they did not have a smartphone at home. Kumar was under tremendous pressure to buy a smartphone as soon as possible so that his kids could continue their online classes. He alleged that school teacher told him if his kids were to continue their classes then they would have to attend them online.

Kumar further said that he was denied a loan of Rs 6,000 from banks and money lenders due to his poor financial condition and this led to him selling off his cow for Rs 6,000 which was his only source of income.

Kumar, his wife and his two children live in a mud hut and don't even have a BPL card.

However, local MLA Ramesh Dhawala has directed the BDO and SDM to provide immediate financial assistance to Kumar's family.
