Rare golden eagle, red sand boa worth Rs 5.25 crore seized in MP; 10 arrested

The golden eagle is worth Rs 3 crore in the international market while the sand boa is priced at Rs 2.25 crore

New Delhi: A rare golden eagle and a red sand boa were seized at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. The seizure worth Rs 5.25 crore was done in a joint operation carried out by state forest department and a team of special task force (STF).

A joint raid was conducted in Ujjain after a tip off where 10 people including four women were hiding the bird and snake at a hotel in Bypass Road. All of them were taken into custody after the rare golden eagle and red sand boad was seized by the state forest department and team of STF.

"The golden eagle is worth Rs 3 crore in the international market while the sand boa snake will fetch Rs 2.25 crore," STF Ujjain wing's Superintendent of Police Gitesh Kumar told reporters.

Kumar said that the rare eagle is used for various occult activities while the two-mouthed red sand boa is used to make traditional medicines. Along with the arrest of the 10 people involved in the crime, two vehicles were also seized.

The rare golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is a bird known mostly for being one of the finest hunters and is normally found in the northern hemisphere. The red sand boa snake (Eryx johnii) has long fallen prey to supertitious beliefs that it brings good luck and can also cure terminal diseases in humans.
