New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir cadre IPS officer Basant Rath was placed under immediate suspension for alleged reports of "gross misconduct" during his line of duty, said an order from the Union home ministry.
The order that was issued on the evening of July 7 said that the 2000-batch IPS officer from Odisha was to be immediately attached to the police headquarters in Srinagar.
Rath grabbed headlines many times for his different approach of solving problems. He was earlier accused of slapping media persons and for unprovoked attacks on civilians for petty issues.
Rath, who is posted as inspector general of civil defence, has been ordered not to leave the headquarters without seeking permission from the director general of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
The order from Union home ministry further state that disciplinary proceedings against Rath have been reported in connection with repeated instances of gross misconduct and misbehaviour during duty and such instances have come into the notice of the government. The order further said that Rath has been placed under suspension with immediate effect.
