Lightning strikes 23 districts of Bihar, leaves 83 dead in 12 hrs

Deaths were reported from 23 districts of Bihar, with Gopalganj being the worst affected with 13 casualties

New Delhi: Lightning struck at several places in Bihar, killing at least 83 people, including 26 children, in a single day. Confirming the death toll, Bihar Disaster Management Authority stated that all the deaths took place in a span of 12 hours.

Deaths were reported from 23 districts of Bihar; however, Gopalganj was the worst affected with 13 casualties, followed by Madhubani and Nawada with 8 deaths reported from each district.

In majority of the cases, most of them died when they were out of their homes and were struck by lightning. The districts of Siwan and Bhagalpur also reported six deaths each. Banka, Darbhanga and East Champaran districts reported five deaths each and Khagaria and Aurangabad reported two deaths each.

According to Gopalganj sub-divisional officer Upendra Pal, 13 people in the district died when they were struck by lightling while working in the fields.

Chief minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar announced an ex gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the victims. Prime minister Narendra Modi also tweeted his condolences to the deceased in Bihar.
