New Delhi: The Indian Army has made changes to its rules of engagement following the increased tension between India and China at eastern Ladakh on June 15. The new rule will now allow field commanders to allow army personnel to use firearms under "extraordinary" circumstances.

According to reports, China has been informed of the latest changes in rules of engagement and that India will respond to Chinese aggression at the border. As per earlier rules under 1996 India-China agreement, Army and ITBP personnel were not allowed to carry loaded weapons during patrolling at the border and the gun barrels were mandated to be pointed downwards. The new rules of engagement now allows commanders to use any weapons they deem fit during any violence from the Chinese side.

According to reports, during a meeting of the Army, Air Force and Navy chiefs with defence minister Rajnath Singh, the armed forces stationed at Line of Actual Control (LAC) have been given full freedom and have been asked to maintain strict vigil on all Chinese activities in land, air and strategic sea lanes.

The situation in eastern Ladakh remains tense following the violent clash between Indian Army and Chinese troops on June 15 that left Indian Army personnel martyred and Chinese soldiers dead. India has also returned Chinese soldiers who were captured during the clash when they crossed over to Indian side.
