New Delhi: A male elephant died in Kerala's Malappuram merely days after the country witnessed a horrific death of a pregnant elephant on May 27 when it reportedly ate a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers.

The male elephant in Malappuram died after it received serious injuries in North Nilambur forest range and didn't respond to any treatment by the forest department veterinarians.

According to the forest officials, the jumbo was being treated for its injuries for five days. "Locals in the region found the injured elephant and informed the forest officials. On inspection, wounds were found on the tusker. The injury marks suggested that it could have been caused during a fight with other elephants. He was treated after being tranquilised," the official said.

A special medical team was also called from Wayanad to treat the elephant but it succumbed to its injuries.

The dead elephant was later burnt by the forest officials after completion of post-mortem examination.
