India now 5th worst-COVID-hit country crossing Spain in 24 hours

On Saturday, India overtook Spain to become the fifth worst-hit country in the global pandemic of COVID-19 with 2,47,195 confirmed cases

New Delhi: India just reached yet another grim milestone on Saturday as it overtook Spain to become the fifth worst-hit country in the global pandemic of COVID-19.

With 2,47,195 confirmed cases and 6,950 deaths, the country is now behind the US, Russia, Brazil, and the UK. Going by the data of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), India recorded a whopping 9,887 new cases and 294 deaths by 8 am Saturday. This was by far the biggest single-day jump in both cases and fatalities.

Hence, in less than 24 hours according to the Johns Hopkins University Data, India surpassed Italy and then Spain to reach this grim milestone.

The state of Maharashtra still continues to be the worst affected in the country with 82,968 confirmed cases to date. The state alone brought in 2,739 COVID-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours with 120 new deaths reported on Friday. The total death tally in Maharashtra stands at 2,969.

Maharashtra is followed by Tamil Nadu with 30,152 confirmed cases, Delhi at 26,334, Gujarat at 19,094, Rajasthan T 10,084, and Uttar Pradesh at 9,733.

However, on a better note, India has also declared that 1,19,293 patients have been recovered so far with a recovery rate of 48.3% and has done a total of 46,66,389 RTPCR tests to decipher the presence of COVID-19 virus in suspected patients so far.
