New Delhi: Several complaints were received by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of a foul smell emanating from various areas of Mumbai late on Saturday night.

Residents in the areas of Chembur, Ghatkopar, Chandivali, Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli, and Powai complained about the possible “gas leak smell”, following which fire brigade services were rushed to those areas to locate the source. Even the disaster control board was alerted.

Later on Sunday, Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter to address the situation and even urged the people to stay indoors. He tweeted, “With regards to the foul odor across some parts of Mumbai, as of now the Mumbai Fire Brigade has been activated with its SoPs. I appeal to all to stay indoors, not panic. Close your windows. @mybmc is actively monitoring this situation.”

As of now, no gas leakage was found in any of the given locations; however Mumbai’s chief fire officer PS Rahangdale agreed that some smell was felt in the Andheri area and that a total of 17 fire engines were deputed for the search of the gas. The chief fire officer added that investigation is underway by senior officials, with HPCL, BPCL, MGL, RCF, and the police were informed.

BMC later also tweeted reassuring the people that the situation is under control. “Situation is under control. All necessary resources have been mobilised. The origin of the smell is being investigated. 17 fire appliances are on field equipped with public announcement system and ready for a response if required,” they tweeted.
