New Delhi: Among the two senior Mumbai policemen who interrogated Republic TV founder and senior journalist Arnab Goswami, at least one has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. This was revealed by senior advocate Harish Salve, who is the lawyer of Goswami. He made this claim during a hearing in Supreme Court.

On April 28, the journalist was questioned by the police officials for over 12 hours over an FIR which was filed against him for his comments on the Palghar mob lynching case and on Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress filed more than 150 FIRs against Goswami from various states across the country. He was accused of using derogatory language and “deliberately making inflammatory statements” against Sonia Gandhi. FIRs came from the states of Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Supreme Court then clubbed all the FIRs into one and then transferred to Mumbai.

Also, a fresh FIR was filed by Raza Academy a week later. Raza Academy alleged that Goswami disturbed communal harmony over the issue of migrants gathering in Bandra near a mosque. In August 2012, the academy had organised a protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai which later escalated to riots. The riots resulted in the desecration of Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial by the mobs.

Additionally, on May 4, the Maharashtra government applied on behalf of Deputy Commissioner of Mumbai Police in the Supreme Court, alleging that the editor is ‘hampering the investigation’ against him by browbeating the officials with his shows on Republic TV channels.
