New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind signed a warrant appointing Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Tuesday.

As CJI, Bobde will take oath on November 18. With an experience of eight years as judge to the apex court of the country, Bobde will be the 47th CJI and is likely to be in that position till April 23, 2021.

This comes after the current CJI Ranjan Gogoi, following the tradition of appointment system of his immediate successor, on October 18 wrote to the government recommending the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as the next CJI. Rajan Gogoi, who is the 46th CJI, was sworn in on October 3, 2018, and will retire on November 17.

Several top dignitaries are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony, including senior ministers from the Modi cabinet and several senior judges from the top court and other high courts.
