Scores of users faced problems receiving their one-time passwords (OTP) through SMS on Monday from banks, e-commerce and other companies, thanks to an industry-wide disruption in SMS services.
The troubles affected everything from CoWIN registration OTPs, bank OTPs for debit card transactions, and systems like two-factor authentication OTPs to log into accounts online. Though telecom operators did not make any official statements, industry sources said the issues were owing to new SMS regulations, which have been set up to control SMS fraud. What happened in the process, however, were several other problems with transactions.
According to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), telemarketers have to be registered in the DLT platform. Distributed Ledger Technology or DLT is a block-chain based registration system being issued in public interest to control SMS spam from various marketing firms.
As a result, many people have been facing problems.
