Arpactophilus pulawskii

Guwahati: In a groundbreaking discovery for Indian entomology, researchers have identified a new species of aphid wasp, Arpactophilus pulawskii, in Nagaland’s Khuzama district. This marks the first recorded presence of the genus Arpactophilus outside Australasia, putting the region in the global spotlight for biological research.

The species was identified and catalogued by scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), signifying a major range expansion, with the nearest known species previously found in Indonesia. The genus Arpactophilus, established by Smith in 1863, is a small yet intriguing group of aphid wasps, comprising 74 known species worldwide. Until now, the genus had only been reported from the Australasian region, with a significant number of species in New Caledonia. Members of this genus display remarkable morphological variation, including differences in body length and head shape, and some exhibit modifications in head size and shape. They are particularly fascinating because they are among the few apoid wasps that exhibit social behavior.

The research team, led by entomologists S. Amal, P. Girish Kumar, and A. Rameshkumar, collected the wasp at an altitude of over 1,800 meters, underscoring Nagaland’s unique ecological conditions that support such specialized fauna.

“The discovery in India’s northeastern hills expands the genus’s known range by thousands of kilometers, hinting at unexplored ecological connections between Nagaland and Australasia,” the study published in Zootaxa states.

Primarily native to Australasia, Arpactophilus species are known for their distinctive nesting behavior, with females using silk from their abdomen to create protective cells in old termite galleries or mud nests.

The specimen, collected in 2021, exhibits unique physical characteristics that differentiate it from its congeners. Arpactophilus pulawskii features a distinct square-shaped head with an inverted V-shaped uplifted clypeus and rust-colored body markings. Additionally, it has a uniquely textured thorax that further sets it apart. These traits have captured the interest of entomologists who suggest that further study of additional specimens could reveal even more significant findings, potentially justifying the creation of a new genus within the subfamily.

“This discovery could pave the way for further entomological research in Northeastern India, revealing the extraordinary diversity of life harbored in the hills of Nagaland,” said scientists involved in the project. They also noted that such discoveries provide critical insights into how climate and geography influence species distribution and could lead to the identification of more unknown species in the region.

Named in honour of Dr. Wojciech J. Pulawski for his notable contributions to wasp taxonomy, Arpactophilus pulawskii symbolizes Nagaland’s importance as a biodiversity hotspot, stimulating global interest and promoting further scientific research initiatives in India’s northeastern states.
