Kohima: The 4th edition of the much-awaited Kohima Super Cup, organised by the Kohima Town Club (KTC) began on Monday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima after a gap of two years following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony as the special guest, Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie, highlighted the sustainability of the sport in the state. Despite being ardent football lovers, he said that football had not become a sustainable sport in the state due to fault in circumstances as there is a lack of firms that can support and invest in football.

While sportspersons from the neighbouring state of Manipur have produced professional players at the national and international levels, he said that sports in Nagaland should not remain a seasonal sport. He encouraged sportspersons to seriously take up sports as a profession and upgrade the standard of players.

He also encouraged the KTC to identify young players and approach the state government for support. In this regard, he said that sportspersons from the state need exposure. He also assured to be a lifetime patron of the club, in the pursuit to promote football and make it a sustainable sport in the state.

Taking the opportunity, the senior SP also called for unity among all Naga tribes and further advocated for Naga youth to practice a sustainable livelihood.

KTC President Dr Viketoulie Pienyü informed that the club, comprising of about 40 members was formed with the noble intention to promote football and also make football a sustainable industry. Despite the challenges in the football scenario in Nagaland, he said that there is now a need to elevate the sport for which the sport must be taken to the community level.

Beginning with the family, he said that all citizens should join hands to build an economy for the football industry. He urged the need for football teams to build a strong fan base while also encouraging the need for quality and disciplined football players.

In the first match played between New Market FC and Crimsoune club, the former won by a scoreline of 10-1. On Tuesday, A Yhome FC will take on United Brothers FC in the first match at 11:30 AM while Barack FC will take on Wolves XI in the second match to be played at 1:30 PM.
