A cadre of the NSCN-k Niki group was reportedly killed in a firing incident between the NSCN-Unification group and NSCN-K Niki group on late Sunday night near Khehoi Camp in Dimapur district.

The deceased was identified as Atoka, an additional secretary of the NSCN-K Niki group.

A source in the group told EastMojo that the “ambush” took place when the deceased, along with three other members, were on their way to pick up some of their cadres who were “abducted” by the NSCN-U group.

The source alleged that a few months ago, about 10 were “abducted” by the NSCN-U group. They were ‘forced’ to sign an agreement to join the group, he said. “Somehow, some of them conveyed to us that they did not want to join the group. So, we sent some members to get them, but on the way, they were ambushed, and the additional secretary was killed,” the source said.

A reliable source from the NSCN-U told EastMojo that the incident happened around Sunday midnight near its designated camp at Khehoi. “They (NSCN-K Niki group) came to pick some of our boys from our camp,” the source said.

The source informed that after receiving the input that the NSCN-K Niki group were heading to Khehoi, some cadres were waiting by the roadside near the camp. According to the source, when a vehicle carrying the Niki Sumi cadres were asked to stop, one of the cadres allegedly stepped down and began to fire which compelled the group to retaliate.

Following the incident, one of the NSCN-K Niki cadres was killed while one was “apprehended” by the NSCN-U and two “escaped”. While the intention was not to kill, the NSCN-U source said that the retaliation was an act to “defend” themselves.

“As per the Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGR), even the security forces are not allowed to come within 1 Km stretch of the designated camp. But they (Niki Sumi cadres) came into our jurisdiction intentionally. If we had bad intentions, all of them would have been killed. Our intention is very clear that killing one another won’t solve any problem. But it is our human right to defend ourselves,” the source said.

When asked about the arrested Niki Sumi cadre, the NSCN-U source said, “We will see what will be the outcome but it is not necessary that we will kill the arrested person.”
