Kohima: Amid the recent proposal to form a Naga tribal apex body for the state of Nagaland, the Zeliangrong and Rengma Nagas living in Assam have appealed to all Naga tribes and its apex body leaders to “continue to support and stand with the Naga Hoho”.
Through a release, Pauheu Newme, Convenor of the Rengma and Zeliangrong Council of Assam, and G thuangan, its general secretary said that the Naga Hoho is the “Supreme Civil Apex Body” regardless of the artificial boundaries of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal, and Burma.
It reminded that the Naga Hoho was formed by the Naga people on the foundation day of tribes Hoho on March 11 and 12 in 1998 at Zunheboto with the objective to uphold solidarity, rebuild Naga Family and facilitate the settlement of Naga Issues, to protect Naga System and tradition and to promote social culture and political heritage.
“The Naga Hoho plays an important role in resolving conflict situations amongst different factions of the Nagas. The organization has initiated to unite the 39 Naga tribes irrespective of the artificial state boundaries. We appreciate the role of Naga Hoho involvement in the process of Indo Naga Talks and they believe that the settlement should be inclusive of all the Naga inhabited areas,” it said.
The Rengma and Zeliangrong Nagas sang praises that the Naga Hoho is facilitating various issues with the strength and support of the different tribes and Apex Bodies irrespective of regions and states boundaries.
It said that in April 2009 when an ethnic clash broke out between Dimasas and the Zeme Naga, the apex body members visited and extended help and later in June that year also supported the Memorandum sent to the Prime Minister of India to protect the life of minority Nagas in the NC Hills.
Likewise, it said that in 2014 when another ethnic clash flared up in Karbi Anglong, the Naga Hoho intervened and took a “vital role in restoring peace” in the district. It goes on to say that it remains grateful to the Naga Hoho.
“We the Nagas of Assam believe and support that the Naga Hoho is the only Apex Body which is actively working across all the Nagas inhabited areas irrespective of outside and within Nagaland. Hence, we wou Neiba Kronu ld not support any kind of initiatives to form other Apex Organization which will confuse the general public and function in Parallel with the existing Naga Hoho,” it added.
As reported earlier, following the recent consultative meeting of the state government with tribal hohos, Nagaland government spokesperson Neiba Kronu had informed that the leaders in attendance have discussed the need to form an apex tribal body for Nagas living in the state of Nagaland.
Kronu, who is the member secretary of the Parliamentary committee on Naga political issue, had said that although the Naga hoho, an apex body of Naga tribes, is still functioning, there is a need to create a new tribal apex body for Nagas living in Nagaland, like the United Naga Council, the apex body of the Nagas living in Manipur.
