Kohima: Despite a decline in new COVID-19 cases in Nagaland, the health department notified that the number of COVID-19 deaths increased, with 84 COVID-19 deaths reported in the past week till Friday.
According to the health department, this is the first time in a month weekly new cases declined.
The weekly bulletin issued by the medical department stated that 21% of deaths happened within 24 hours of arrival to a hospital, signifying arrival with very advanced symptoms. Out of the 84 deaths reported in the past week, 10 deaths were among patients in home isolation.
A closer look at the timing of COVID-19 deaths reported this year shows that 21% of deaths were within 24 hours of arrival to the hospitals. Seventeen per cent deaths occurred within one day, 16% within two days, 16% in 3-5 days, 14% in 6-10 days, 8% in 11-15 days, 2% in 16-22 days, 1% were brought dead to the hospitals, and 5% of deaths were from home isolation.
Of the 259 deaths reported this year, 56 cases are still under investigation.
So far, there have been no COVID-19-related deaths among patients below the age of 14. The COVID-19 death rate among 45-59 years is 33%, followed by 27% among 60-74 years, 25% among 30-44 years, 12% above 75 years and 3% among 15-29 years.
The COVID-19 mortality rate among male patients fell 1% this year, while the mortality rate among female patients rose. Last year, males comprised 72% of the total deaths, with females at 28%.
Of the total deaths in the state till Friday, 50% of the deaths were with comorbidity and 5% without comorbidity. Another 45% are yet to be determined. The most common comorbidity is diabetes, followed by hypertension.
Meanwhile, seven more deaths have been reported on Saturday taking the death toll in the state to 338. This means that a total of 91 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in the past eight days.
156 new cases of COVID-19 were also detected in the state on Saturday, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 21,371. The state’s current active case is 4,982 with 4,641 asymptomatic cases, 153 mild symptomatic cases, 87 moderate cases on oxygen, 73 severe cases on oxygen, 20 severe cases in ICU without a ventilator, and eight severe cases in ICU on a ventilator.
15,414 patients have so far recovered from COVID-19 in Nagaland. Besides the 338 COVID-19 deaths, 12 more COVID-19 patients have died but the deaths are not due to COVID-19.
