Kohima: Due to the detection of 12 fresh cases of COVID-19 among players on Wednesday at the ongoing 21st Inter-District Football Championship (Dr T Ao Trophy), the tournament stands suspended for now. 

The tournament began on Monday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima, with 12 teams vying for the coveted title. On Wednesday, a total of 13 fresh cases of COVID-19 were detected in the state, of which 12 are tournament players, a health official told EastMojo.

The organising committee of the tournament, through a press note informed that COVID-19 positive cases from among representatives from certain districts were detected at the tournament despite necessary directives to all the district football associations to follow strict mandatory protocol set by the organising committee and necessary SOPs that are required to be followed.

Akumla Chuba, director of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) and the convenor of the organising committee, and Benei Y Lamthiu, tournament secretary, informed that all who tested positive for COVID-19 were shifted immediately to the quarantine centre and are under proper medical care.

They informed the remaining players are under observation. All necessary SOPs and precautionary measures were taken within the affected area to contain the spread, they added. 

On Wednesday, Phek (4) defeated Tuensang (1) in the first match, Zunheboto (3) defeated Kiphire (1) in the second match; Dimapur (3) defeated Wokha (0) in the third match. In the fourth match, Kohima was awarded a walkover win against Longleng due to technical issues.
