Nagaland: BSF conducts half marathon to commemorate 1971 war martyrs

A total of 125 personnel from the unit participated in the run

Kohima: The 93 Batallion Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday morning conducted a relay race/ half marathon in Kohima to commemorate martyrs and heroes of 1971 War. The run which began from the Police Headquarters in Kohima was flagged off by the superintendent of Police (SP) Kohima Manoj Kumar, IPS.

A total of 125 personnel from the unit participated in the run. Commandant of 93 Bn BSF informed that unit was raised on April 1 in 1968 with the amalgamation of troops from various BSF units and Manipur Rifles.

According to him, after its formation, this unit participated in the 1971 War in Eastern theatre, and at the time of conflict, this unit was deployed in Teliamura in Tripura. It undertook various operations to repulse the attack of East Pakistan Army and halted its advance into Indian territories at the same time, he informed.

An update from the battalion further informed that in March 1971, the Eastern Sector became active due to misadventures of East Pakistan Army, and on March 25, 1971, the 93 Battalion BSF was given the responsibility to demolish important bridges/culverts in front of Jalya Subsector, to check the advance of East Pakistan Army.

Under the Supervision of DP Singh Assistant Commandant, two camps were established at Jayachandra Bari and Silachari Border outpost for imparting training to Mukti Bahini personnel for Guerrilla Operations.

The Martyrs of the 93 Battalion BSF who made significant contribution and sacrifice during the war of 1971 included Md Ziaullah Asstt. Comdt PPMG(Retd IG), the officer conducted various raids on Pakistani posts of East Pakistan Army and rescued 150-200 refugees and returned belongings and valuables looted by East Pak Army Personnel; D P Singh Assistant Commandant PMG who was in charge of commando platoon which completed the task of destruction and demolition of important bridges and culverts on important roads; Assistant Commandant DP Singh who was entrusted with the task of Training personnel of Mukti Bahini Fauz personnel; Naik Balbir Singh Rawat who was on a mission to assist Mukti Bahini personnel in the attack in Ramshira in Bangladesh on May 3, 1971; Captain Rajaballav Prasad who fought heroically and enabled his companions to reach to safety, when their party was ambushed; Captain Agnimohan Karmakar who was injured in a mine blast while participating in an operation in Raima sector where 15 Pakistan Army collaborators were captured.

The battalion informed that the acts of valour and sacrifice always of these here inspire the troops and soldiers to strive for nation-building by concerted efforts.
