Anticipating CM to step down in favour of Naga peace solution: Nagaland Congress

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has decided to stay away from the "superfluous consultative meeting" scheduled on October 15

Kohima: The Nagaland congress on Wednesday said that as Nagas are at the "threshold of inking final agreement", it anticipates the state government led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio to step down in favour of the solution.

The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) during a meeting on Wednesday also decided that the party will stay away from the scheduled consultative meeting called by State government on October 15.

The meeting in Kohima will discuss "the most important issue" that the Naga society is presently faced with concerning the Naga political issue and ongoing peace talks between Naga National Political Organisations and Central government.

The state Congress party, through an official statement, said that the PAC was unanimous in its opinion that convening this Consultative Meeting has "become superfluous". It said that the negotiating parties made it clear that talks have successfully concluded on October 31 last year.

"Governor and Government of India have already solution in their mind, and we soon expect a final agreement to be signed," the party said.

The party said that it has already presented the present position of negotiation and stakeholders view to High Powered Committee of AICC and leaders of the congress parliamentary committees in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for support to the views expressed by stakeholders. The congress will stand with stakeholders in Parliament as and when the occasion arises, it said.

"Since we are at the threshold of inking final agreement, we anticipate that the state Govt under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will step down in favour of solution which has been his commitment for the past seventeen years, and in which, he has never failed to remind the people of Nagaland while addressing every political or social gathering. We therefore urge Chief Minister Rio to uphold his commitment and avoid being an obstacle in paving the way for post solution arrangement," the party said.

Putting its views, it reiterated its position to stay away from the "superfluous consultative meeting".
