Nagaland environment minister succumbs to COVID-19; toll touches 13
Kohima: Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Justice & Law, CM Chang succumbed to COVID-19 on Monday. The COVID-19 death toll in the state touched 13.
As reported earlier, Chang was admitted at the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) where he passed away. Health officials confirmed that the cause of death was due to COVID-19.
He had co-morbid conditions and was critical. His mortal remains will be transported to his native village in Noksen Village under Tuensang district for burial on Tuesday.
Chang was a retired IAS officer, and former Member of Parliament from Nagaland. A minister in the state cabinet, he was a member of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) since 2018.
So far, 13 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Nagaland. Besides these deaths, five deaths are not due to COVID-19, and another six deaths are under investigation. Nagaland has reported 7,340 COVID-19 positive cases of which 1403 are active cases and 5754 are recovered cases.
Mourning the demise of Late CM Chang, Nagaland governor RN Ravi said "We shall remember him for his contribution to the State of Nagaland as an able Administrator, a prominent Parliamentarian, a Minister and a hugely popular public figure".
The governor added saying "In his demise not only has the Chang Community lost a tall leader but is a loss for the entire State and the Country. I on behalf of the people of Nagaland and my behalf convey our heartfelt condolences to you and other family members".
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio also said that his demise has created a huge vacuum for the Nagas and that his significant sacrifices for the welfare of the society will be remembered.
Deputy chief minister Y Patton tweeted: "My condolences go out to the bereaved family of Minister Shri C.M. Chang! Shri Chang had always kept the welfare of the people first, whether as an IAS officer, a Lok Sabha MP, or as a Minister. In his demise, we've suffered today an irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace!"
Mmhonlumo Kikon, adviser IT, Science & Technology, NRE and BJP national spokesperson wrote: "You dedicated your entire life in the service of the people. Your selfless work for the state in your capacity as MP & Minister will be forever cherished. It pains me immensely to know you have left us for the heavenly abode. May your kind soul RIP C M Chang!"
State health minister S Pangnyu Phom said "I am saddened by the demise of Shri. C M Chang, Hon'ble Minister, who breathed his last at NHAK today. With his passing away, our state has lost a great soul & a dynamic leader of our time, whose absence will immensely affect our people. My condolences to the bereaved family".
