71 persons aged between 5 and 63 years have registered for the service. On Tuesday, 31 received free eye check-up
Kohima: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 70th birthday, locals in Nagaland availed free eye check-up as part of the “Free Eye Camp” organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) ST Morcha state unit. While the target was set for 70 beneficiaries, a total of 71 persons aged between 5 and 63 years registered for the service.
As part of the ‘Sewa Saptah’ (service week) in commemoration of the premier’s birthday on September 17, the free eye check-up is being conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Tuesday, a total of 31 persons out of the total registered, received medical attention and were given spectacles. The other 41 are scheduled for Wednesday.
Speaking with EastMojo, one of the beneficiaries emotionally shared that she had been suffering from eye-pain for the past 2-3 months. She recounted how tear drops would fall constantly due to the eye pain.
Following the lockdown, she said that her eyes worsened but she denied herself of treatment as she could not afford to. “My son kept telling me to get a check-up but I did not. I told him that I had no money to,” she emotionally said.
She then said that her youngest son saw a poster about the free eye check-up camp which circulated online and told her about it, following which she came forward and availed the free eye check up in Kohima. After months in pain, she finally received the treatment, that too free of cost.
Another beneficiary told EastMojo that when he came to the optics to receive eye check-up, they informed him about the free medical check-up and he managed to avail the benefit. While the eye-check-up is for free, an amount of Rs 1,000 is waived off as concessions for spectacles.
However, a BJP party worker informed that most beneficiaries availed the spectacles free of cost as it was worth below Rs 1000.
Speaking about the eye camp, Wanphong Konyak, president of the ST Morcha, narrated that the Nagaland BJP initiated the Sewa Saptah in celebrtion of the 70th birthday of PM Modi. Through the state level ST Morcha team, the eye camp was organized in Kohima.
“We were not expecting this much of people but fortunately, the number of patients is 70 and the number reached today,” she said.
The party also accepted the registration of a 62-year-old man who approached them even after the registrations were closed.
However, few others who came to the avail the service could not be registered as the target limit exceeded. She said that they will also be visiting 70 hospitals and colonies across all districts to distribute fruits.
Many other services are also being conducted as part of the Sewa Saptah through various Morchas. As everything is done to honor the PM, Konyak wished the PM a happy birthday.
