Nagaland proposes 3 ‘Nagar Vans’ in Kohima and Tuensang

During a meeting with Union minister Prakash Javadekar, the state govt also suggested that school nursery scheme be extended to colleges & universities

Kohima: Nagaland proposes to establish three 'Nagar Vans' in Kohima and Tuensang under the Nagar Van Yojana. Two Nagar Vans in Kohima municipality and one Nagar Van has been been proposed by the government of Nagaland.

During a meeting with the Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar on Monday over video conferencing, CM Chang, minister for environment, forest and climate change, highlighted about the proposal.

The ‘Nagar Van’ is a scheme being launched by the ministry that envisages creating forests in 200 urban cities across the country on public-private-partnership basis. The ministry would offer an initial grant of Rs 2 crore for fencing, maintenance and administrative costs of the earmarked land to be developed.

An update from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rajkumar M said that in the meeting, Chang had mentioned that Nagaland is one of the smallest states in the country but has one of the highest forest cover among the states. Chang expressed contentment that the ministry is taking up new initiatives towards conservation and development of forest resources.

Chang also suggested that School Nursery Scheme can be extended to colleges and universities. Under the 20 Point Program, the minister assured that plantation targets given to the state will be achieved.

Under rejuvenation of 13 major rivers, the minister mentioned that Nagaland is a part of the Brahmaputra Rejuvenation Plan and that the stakeholder's consultation has already taken place jointly by the Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat and the State's Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department. "Nagaland is ready for implementation in an integrated manner," the minister said.

In regard to the use of LIDAR technology for project preparation for soil moisture Nagaland with project site in Mon conservation, the minister said that the process is already underway. As the district is being identified for the project, the Department has already conveyed the details about the identified area to FSI and the Ministry.

Chang also expressed happiness to learn about the launch of National Transit Portal and assured that the department will initiate preparatory steps for transitioning to the National Transit Pass System.

In the meeting chaired by minister Javadekar, he briefed about the new schemes by the Central government including the newly announced "Project Lion" and "Project Dolphin". Dharmendra Prakash, PCCF & HOFF, Nagaland, Rajkumar M, DFO Kohima and Khelen Samom, WPO also attended the Video conference along with the minister.
