Kohima: Ahead of the Independence day celebration at Dan, Pangsha under the newly created district of Noklak in Nagaland, a "crossfire standoff" took place on Saturday along the Myanmar border. No casualties were reported.

Sources from the armed forces alleged that insurgents opened fire at the Dan Assam Rifles Border Post from the other side of the border in Myanmar at two separate locations during the wee hours on Saturday.

Sources told EastMojo that around 2:15 am, around three to four bursts was heard from approximately 600 m from Dan. The Assam Rifles retaliated and around one-two lathode rounds were fired.

Later, firings were heard from approximately 400 m from where the first firing was heard. The AR reportedly retaliated and the firing ended at around 3:40 am.

An official update from the PRO IGAR (N) said that insurgents attempted to disrupt peace and tranquility in the region, when they opened fire on the post from across the border at the wee hours on Saturday, taking advantage of the inclement weather.

"The same was retaliated by troops in a befitting manner which ensued in insurgents fleeing from the area, deeper into Myanmar territory," the update said. It added that "the cowardly act in no way dampened the spirits of the troops and residents who celebrated the 74th Independence Day in true traditions and fervour after calling off the operations".

The Dan Assam Rifles Border Post under the aegis of HQ IGAR (North) celebrated the 74th Independence Day along with the residents of Dan, Pangsha and Wensui amid full patriotic fervor.

The tricolour was hoisted at Dan Public ground with a ceremonial salute by Assam Rifles personnel, Village Guards, Nagaland Police detachment, village functionaries and community elders and large number of children also attended the ceremony.

A community feast was hosted by the AR for all guests keeping the social distancing in mind. Around 150 local residents reportedly attended the celebrations.

The NSCN led by Nyemlang Konyak reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack at the Assam Rifles Post.
