The BSL-2 will operate RT-PCR of gold standard test for detecting cases of COVID-19 with a sample capacity of 90 in a single run
Kohima: With the inauguration of the Bio safety laboratory level-2 (BSL-2) in Dimapur on Saturday, Nagaland received its second virology laboratory--after the BSL-3 in Kohima. The laboratory at Christian Institute Of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) in Dimapur was inaugurated by the minister of Health & Family Welfare S Pangnyu Phom.
Taking to Twitter, the minister wrote: "Inaugurated the BSL-2 Lab at CIHSR, Dimapur today for the people of Nagaland. Accompanied by @Shri Jacob Zhimomi & Hon'ble Colleagues & Department Officers. The Lab will enhance the testing capacity on COVID-19 & help test other diseases in the long run."
In a daily briefing, Principal Secretary Home Abhijit Sinha said "The BSL-2 will operate the RT-PCR which is the gold standard test for detecting cases of COVID-19. The advantage of this platform lies in its accuracy as well as the ability to run up to 90 samples in a single run".
He said that the operationalization of the lab will "boost the testing capacity in the state and strengthen the fight against the spread of COVID-19 by enabling early detection and containment of infection".
The health minister was accompanied by Jacob Zhimomi, Minister of PHED; Tovihoto Ayemi, Advisor for Power; Zhaleo Rio, Advisor for Sericulture, Excise and Minority Affairs; Toshi Wungtung, Advisor for IPR, SCERT & VG and MLA Azheto Zhimomi. Senior officials including APC & in-charge of Dimapur district to co-ordinate COVID-19 related activities, Secretary to Health & Family Welfare Department, Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur and Commissioner of Police, Dimapur also attended the inauguration.
Meanwhile, Nagaland has recorded a total number 387 positive cases out of which, the total number of active cases are 223 and 164 are recovered cases. Sinha said that all positive persons are receiving medical care at the designated COVID-19 Hospitals. As reported, 218 active cases are asymptomatic and five active cases are mild symptomatic cases.
Till Saturday, a total of 11,158 samples have been tested and the results of 10,197 samples have been received. Out of 11,158 samples, 7715 samples have been received at the BSL-3 lab at the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) and a total of 6,981 samples have been tested out of which 316 samples have tested positive.
In addition, a total of 4,246 samples have been tested by Truenat machines, out of which 73 samples have tested positive and sent for confirmation by RT-PCR. He further informed that a total of 4,290 persons are presently under facility quarantine.
