Kohima: A 35-year-old man, who was reportedly extorting money from various shops in Kohima was shot dead during a scuffle with the Nagaland police personnel at Old NST in Kohima on Tuesday evening. His accomplice a 25-year-old was arrested.
According to Sr Superintendent of Police Kevithutho Sophie, on receiving information that "two local guys were extorting money from the shop in the name of NSCN-K", an anti-extortion team of the Kohima Police was sent to the location.
On identifying the two extortionists, the police tried to "corner" them as the two attempted to escape. While one person was "overpowered" and pinned down by the police, the other person was cornered, said Sophie.
One pistol was recovered from the person who was pinned down. As per the police, instead of surrendering, the other person confronted the officer and "tried to snatch" the loaded arm.
"In the scuffle, he was hit by a bullet. He succumbed to his injuries," said Sophie as he addressed media persons at his office on Tuesday evening. The accused was injured on the left side of the neck.
The deceased identified as Khehuto I Assumi, is a resident of Lizutomi under Zunheboto district. Reportedly, Khehuto was also serving as a lance havildar in 164 infantry battalion (Territorial Army) before he got discharged on medical grounds in 2019.
The other accused identified as Aito Awomi, is a resident of Lizutomi, Zunheboto presently residing at New Reserve, Kohima was arrested and taken into custody. A case will be registered against the accused.
The items recovered from the deceased include one .32 mm pistol, one magazine, one live round, one wallet with Rs 1610, identity card, ATM card, passports photos and one mobile.
On conducting a raid at the residence of the deceased, four rubber seals identified as those of, OC police station Zunheboto, Head GB Lizutomi, Capt/Maj/Lt/Col MO I/C MI room 164 Inf Bn TA (H&H) Naga and round seal of 164 Inf Bn TA (H&H) Naga MI room, were seized.
Meanwhile, one Nokia keypad phone, Rs 760, one voter ID and one Aadhaar card were seized from the other accused.
Sophie said that extortion has increased amid the lockdown. Hence police promptly formed anti-extortion teams to investigate these crimes.
Earlier on June 16, two persons were arrested for extorting money from a construction site near NBCC, New Secretariat area. On June 12, the Kohima police also arrested two miscreants for extracting cash from Manipur bound trucks.
