In a joint operation of Army and Assam police, a hardcore rebel belonging to banned militant outfit NSCN (K-YA) nabbed from Assam’s Sivasagar district
Kohima: The Indian Army in a joint operation with the Assam Police apprehended a ‘hardcore' member of the banned militant outfit NSCN (K-Yung Aung) from Singphan Reserve Forest in Sivasagar district of Assam on Saturday.
An update from Lt Col P Khongsai, PRO (Defence) Guwahati, said that based on specific inputs, the joint operation was launched where the rebel was held from a forest located along the Assam-Nagaland border.
The apprehended cadre was identified as self=styled Private Laipa Konyak, 37, of Namsa village under Mon district of Nagaland. “It is suspected that the individual was actively involved in extortion activities in the region,” it said.
One .22 Bolt action rifle and and five live rounds of ammunition were seized. “The successful operation has caused a major dent to the activities of the proscribed group in region. The apprehended individual has been handed over to Mathurapur police station in Assam for further investigations,” it added.
