Melhupra Vero, 1st MP from among Naga people & recipient of Padma Shri in 2006, passes away at 7 am in Walford Colony, Dimapur; he was 86; funeral to be held tomorrow
Dimapur: Melhupra Vero, the first MP from among the Naga people and former president of Naga Hoho, passed away at his residence at Walford Colony in Dimapur, Nagaland at 7 am on Friday. He was 86.
Born in Dimapur, Vero contested to Rajya Sabha in 1989 and won the election on a Congress ticket. In 2006, the government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri for his contributions to society.
On October 1, 2015, the Nagaland government honoured him during the International Day of Older Persons celebrations.
Vero was born in 1934, and went to Shillong and completed his intermediate from St Edmund's college in 1959.
According to reports, Vero's mortal remains will be taken to his hometown in Phek district for the last rites on Saturday.
