Amur falcon roosting site in Nagaland notified as ‘silence zone’

State has found its rightful place on global map for largest congregation of the small raptors that happen at Pangti village in Wokha from Oct to Nov every year

Kohima: Wokha deputy commissioner Manazir Jeelani Samoon on Monday said that the Amur falcon roosting site at Pangti has been temporarily notified a 'silence zone' within a radius of 3 km for the month of October and November.

A DIPR report said the notification was made "since high-intensity sound has been proven to induce fear in wild animals and birds which can force species to abandon their habitat and in addition, interfere with their communications thereby affecting their reproductive interactions and survival".

Nagaland was declared as the falcon capital of the world and has found its rightful place on the global map for conservation due to the largest congregation of Amur falcons that happen at Pangti village under Wokha district from October to November every year.

The announcement was made to towards giving a safe passage to the Amur falcons informing that all activities that may/can cause disturbance to the Amur falcons during their migration season has been prohibited in and around the roosting site as well as throughout the district with immediate effect.
