Kohima: The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) is organising the two-day-long 27th edition of the NWA Championship (Under-16) starting from March 5, 2020.

Revealing this at a press conference at the NWA office on Wednesday, president, Neivikuolie Khatsu, said that the decision was made to encourage all its units and sub-units to train young wrestlers according to the NWA rules.

For the championship, each U-16 team is required to send 12 wrestlers. It has also opened the category for non-wrestling tribes to participate in the championship. Khatsu said that a team depending on the turnouts from the non-wrestling tribes will be formed to compete under the category. He also assured that if there is less participation from these tribes, the registered participants will be divided and distributed to the already existing teams belonging to the constituent units of NWA.

While children born earlier than April 11, 2004 will not be eligible, the required documents for proof of are Aadhaar card and school commutative record book.

The championship will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the association and to mark the celebration, Khatsu informed that a book documenting the art of Naga wrestling will be released.

The NWA championship and the Open Naga Wrestling are separate biennial events that take place in consecutive years. The Naga Wrestling Championship, which will be held next year, will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the NWA foundation. The Naga Wrestling Championship, unlike the Open Wrestling, is exclusively for the three constituent units of the NWA—Angami Sports Association (ASA), Chakesang Wrestling Association (CWA) and Zeliangrong Wrestling Association (ZWA).

Taking a look at the upcoming events, the NWA will be partnering with the Niathu group to introduce Naga Wrestling at the Niathu Sports which will be held on October 25 at Niathu Resort Chumukedima.

NWA will also conduct the first state-level selection for national free style & belt wrestling championship on October 18. Applicable for both male and female, the selection for belt wrestling is categorised as cadet (16-17years), junior (18-19) and senior, which will be held from November 21-24 at Hyderabad, Telangana. The freestyle championship will be held from November 28-30 at Jalandhar, Punjab.

Spilling out plans for the 13th International Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship 2019, Khatsu said that while three-four Uzbekistan wrestlers have confirmed their participation, it is likely to witness players from oust side the state.
