The first ‘Vartalap’ for current financial year was organised by Press Information Bureau under Union ministry of information & broadcasting in state capital
Kohima: With the theme of ‘Identified flagship programmes of the Central Government’, a one-day media workshop was organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) under the Union ministry of information & broadcasting at Hotel Eastgate in Kohima, Nagaland on Thursday.
Welcoming the congregation, Abdul Hamid, IIS, said that the particular media workshop is the first ‘Vartalap’ of the current financial year in the country.
Advisor IT, Science & Technology, New & Renewable Energy, Mmhonlumo Kikon, lauded the ministry for initiating the ‘Vartalap’ and its mission to bridge the gap between the policy makers and the policy implementation and further disseminating it for the welfare of the citizens.
Kikon, who was the chief guest, urged the need for journalists to think from the perspectives of local communities and to serve as ombudsman between the government and communities which will eventually increase the effectiveness of policy implementation. Narrating a few success stories of Naga entrepreneurs and social workers who benefited out of centrally sponsored schemes (CSS), he emphasised the need to “report and re-tell” such stories — be it of success or failure. Further, he related how the CSS has impacted people at the local and state level.
“Journalist needs to reinvent in these times because today every individual with a smart phone in hand is a journalist on the spot” and added “dissemination at the speed of the internet is happening daily,” Kikon said.
Limawati Ao, director, directorate of information and public relations (DIPR), in his address said that the state government will be allotting a PIB office near deputy commissioner’s (DC) office in Kohima. Highlighting the rapid growth of ‘cyber technology wizard’ where information – both real and fake — are disseminated quickly, he urged for the need to focus on welfare and developmental schemes in order to create mass awareness.
Further he said, highlighting the success stories of rural schemes would create more awareness among the rural population which will in turn motivate the various departments to positively compete in scheme implementations. As the nodal department for media, Ao extended the directorate’s collaboration with all other state departments to disseminate information to the general population.
Principal director school education department, GoN, IAS Shanavas C, talked about the need of a “collective responsibility” to bring together the chicken neck (referring to Northeast’s connecting route with mainland India). Saying that developments will take place only if citizens are informed, he highlighted that people in rural areas are least aware about the CSS and that all stakeholders “cannot rest” till all corners of the state are reached.
The technical session was later followed with officials from rural development, school education and skill development giving presentations about the CSS and its developmental activities undertaken by the concerned department.
