Yanghang alias Mopa was the mastermind of attack on Assam Rifles convoy in which 2 jawans were martyred in Mon district on May 25; 4 others were injured in the incident
Kohima: In a major breakthrough, a self-styled major general of banned militant outfit NSCN (K-Yung Aung) was apprehended on Friday after the Assam Rifles launched "sustained military operations in all dimensions".
The arrested militant, Yanghang alias Mopa, was behind the attack on a convoy carrying security personnel in which two jawans were martyred. Four others were injured in the incident that took place between Tobu and Ukha village in Mon district on May 25.
Addressing the media on Saturday, Assam Rifles inspector general (north) KC Nair revealed that the special forces, Assam Rifles and intelligence agencies in a remarkable breakthrough has apprehended "dreaded insurgents of NSCN (K-Yung Aung)" who ambushed the convoy.
Following "sustained military operations", Lt Gen MM Naravane, GOC-C, Eastern Command, had visited the "forward areas" and announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone who would provide information, said Nair. The troops received "tremendous local support and assistance from the civil population", he added.
"A ground input was received regarding presence of these insurgents in the general area of Aboi in Mon district and additional check-points were established all over the area to swarm the target area by daybreak of June 21," Nair said.
"Yanghang is the highest-ranking cadre of NSCN (K-Yung Aung) faction in India, besides being the chief architect of extortion and is a perpetrator of many heinous crimes," added Nair.
Nair further appealed all cadres to give up this "futile course of violence and join the initiative of the government of India in its ceasefire efforts".
Denying reports that several villagers were arrested for interrogation, Nair refused to further comment on any question put forth by the journalists.
