State security enhanced after Delhi police arrest Vijay Farmana, a Haryana-based criminal, who allegedly took a contract to kill a Naga politician after Lok Sabha polls
Kohima: The arrest of Vijay Farmana on Saturday has shaken Nagaland following reports that the suspected ‘hitman’ was allegedly paid by a top politician to kill a ‘high-profile’ Naga politician after the Lok Sabha elections. Immediately after the news was confirmed, the government sounded a high alert to enhance security measures in the state.
TR Zeliang, the leader of opposition in the state, on Saturday tweeted: “It is disturbing to hear about the contract to kill a Naga pafter the LS Election. Investigating agencies should treat this as a high profile case and find out the person/s who paid for the hit job.” The two-time former CM of Nagaland attached a note which read that Farmana and his two associates had taken a contract in April this year to kill a Naga politician and that his associates were paid Rs 80 Lakh and a ford Endeavour car for the job.
In a following tweet, Zeliang appealed the Nagaland government and the state home department to unearth “the truth behind the contract”, stating that it was an “unprecedented case in the annals of Nagaland state”.
To this, state chief secretary Temjen Toy replied that a “team of senior police officers from Nagaland led by an IG is proceeding to Delhi” on Sunday while security measures have been ensured.
Meanwhile, Nagaland deputy CM Y Patton, who is in charge of the home department, stated that after the news was confirmed at the police headquarters in Kohima, the police were directed to coordinate with its counterpart in Delhi to investigate into the details of the case and “to elicit the details of their diabolic designs”. Patton further warned that any Naga citizen found directly or indirectly involved with the criminals will be accorded the “highest” punishment as per the law.
As per reports, Farmana and his associates -- Sharad Pandey and Kapil Chintania -- visited Nagaland in April this year and accepted a contract to kill a ‘high-profile’ politician. However, the name of the ‘top’ politician who paid for the hit job and to whom it was targeted was not revealed by the police due to case sensitivity.
Farmana, as per the Delhi Police, is a graduate from Chhotu Ram Arya Jat College in Sonepat, Haryana and has accepted his involvement in 11 murders, of which three were triple murders committed in Haryana and a rape reported from Begampur, Delhi.
As reported by Hindustan Times, Rajiv Ranjan, additional commissioner of police (crime), said that Farmana runs one of the “biggest syndicates of carjacking” with involvement in at least 50 cases. The Delhi Police received a tip-off on Wednesday that Farmana “who carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for his arrest by Delhi Police and two cash rewards of Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000 by Haryana Police” was spotted in Lucknow. When the police team reached the next day, Farmana was spotted with a woman, as per inputs received by the police. Sensing the trap, Farmana attempted to flee the spot and pulled out a pistol but was overpowered by the police.
G Ram Gopal Naik, dcommissioner of police (crime), revealed that Farmana and his aides “used to flee to other states to evade arrest” after committing a crime and has been changing his locations since 2017.
