Kohima: Nagaland became the first Northeast state to set up a Level-2 Food Laboratory after state principal secretary I Himato Zhimomi inaugurated the facility at the State Public Health Laboratory, Kohima on Tuesday.

In his address, Zhimomi acknowledged the installation of the Level-2 laboratory which is equipped with high-end equipment and expressed how entrepreneurs in the food business can now test and analyse their products before marketing it.

As the name indicates, “high-end” resolution can be attained through this equipment. Mass Spectrometer is an extremely sensitive and specific analytical technique capable of providing qualitative (identification) and quantitative data, Zhimomi said.

Zhimomi also advocated for the need to abide by the food safety rules stating that selling of adulterated food is a punishable offense and further urged the necessity to create public awareness on food safety measures.

Dr Vikeyie Losu, principal director and additional commissioner, food safety, health and family welfare, lauded the “unique” initiative of the state public health laboratory department which has gradually developed to become the first state in the entire Northeast to set up the Level-2 Food Laboratory.
